PIRO focuses on conserving land and marine biodiversity in Zanzibar by protecting marine flora, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and coastal wetlands. The organization promotes aquaculture, beekeeping, regenerative agriculture, businesses along the agriculture value chain and facilitates access to solar energy for women’s groups in anchovy drying to strengthen adaptation and resilience.
We support marine conservation through community training, fishing area zoning, and youth engagement as marine guards, while Village Fishing Committees enforce fishing rules, monitor illegal activities, and protect coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds to enhance co-management and community ownership.
Governance, Accountability and Civic Engagement
This cross-cutting program ensures citizen participation, transparent governance, and social accountability in education and health sectors. PIRO facilitates paralegal aid services, alternative dispute resolution systems, and works to improve justice sector integrity through effective oversight.
