On 28 May 2025, The Popular Inspiring and Relief Organisation (PIRO) continued its mission to promote menstrual health and dignity by providing safe and sustainable menstrual supplies to Makoba Secondary School in Unguja, Zanzibar. This impactful initiative is made possible through the generous support of the Irish Embassy under the Strengthening School System on Menstrual Health Management for Adolescents and Young Girls program.
The handover event was marked by gratitude and optimism. Speaking at the ceremony, the Head Teacher of Makoba Secondary School expressed sincere appreciation to PIRO for the vital support, stating, “This donation is a major step toward improving the school attendance and confidence of our female students. It ensures that no girl will miss class simply because of her menstrual cycle.” She also noted that the initiative will help break long-standing taboos and promote open dialogue around menstrual hygiene among students and staff.
PIRO’s Program Officer, Mr. Mohd, emphasized the organization’s commitment to adolescent health and education: “We believe that menstrual health is a right, not a privilege. Through this program, we aim to build a supportive school environment where girls feel safe, confident, and empowered. Our work goes beyond the supplies we also work with schools to provide awareness, training, and guidance to students and teachers alike.”
The event concluded with a brief orientation session for students on menstrual hygiene practices and the proper use and disposal of the products. Teachers were also provided with materials and guidance to continue supporting menstrual health education within the school curriculum.
This initiative represents a critical step toward gender equity in education and reaffirms PIRO’s dedication to creating inclusive, supportive, and healthy school environments for all students across Zanzibar.
